My team and I used Instagram to cover the Election and the sequence events. This is most likely the longest waiting period in history of elections, but due to COVID-19, it is understandable. I believe covering the election via social media is very effective on social media channels for reporters, because it is the fastest, easiest, and most convenient way to find out new information. I believed it was important to use social media as a platform for the election coverage, since this is the best way to communicate, and the most informative platform we have right now because of COVID. As a group, we all shared different posts covering the election on different social media platforms. My group had the coverage of Instagram, which is an easy platform to gain an audience from, have audience engagement and attention. As a group we covered different topics such as voting encouragement and facts, post-election safety, election delays, mental health, Knox county information and election results. We posted updates on our Instagram Story and tried to stay involved and encouraged as much as we could for the Knox county community and students here at the University of Tennessee.

I learned from my coverage and following other coverages from peers that many of us have the same ideas, thought process, and mindsets but some of us. But this coverage showed that, as all American people, in a time like this, with the election and in the middle of a pandemic, it is best we stick together. We can agree to disagree and try to do these that will be best for the country.

Following my peers while covering this election, I saw nothing but positivity and facts. No one put out negative or misleading information. All pages and resources were used to build a positive platform on the topic in hand. I learned and recommend for any reporters to use a big social media platform to grow their brand and share their stories. Even though it may start off slow, it is still worth trying, finding your niche and building a following. As long as you influence one person, that is all that matters.
